About

CAMERATA MUSICA

Camerata Musica was founded in 2006 as an initiative by Peterhouse, the oldest of the Cambridge colleges, to bring new audiences to classical music; and, in particular, to afford the undergraduate and graduate students of Cambridge the opportunity to hear some of the greatest masterpieces of the Western musical canon in performances by its finest interpreters.

Fully half the seats at all Camerata Musica performances are reserved for students, and, with the series’ reputation now well established, places are regularly oversubscribed. In the five years since its foundation, Camerata Musica has brought to Cambridge artists of the distinction of Sir Thomas Allen, Pinchas Zukerman, Piotr Anderszewski, Viktoria Mullova, Natalie Clein, the Belcea Quartet, the Berlin Philharmonic Piano Quartet, the Florestan Trio, Graham Johnson, Christopher Maltman, the Tallis Scholars, Simon Trpčeski, and Kristian Bezuidenhout among others.

The forthcoming 2011/12 Camerata Musica season includes the premiere of a new work for clarinet and string quartet by James Macmillan, which will be attended by the composer; recitals by the pianists Menahem Pressler (formerly the lynchpin of the Beaux Arts Trio), and Simon Trpčeski; a concert by the countertenor Lawrence Zazzo, fresh from his triumphs at the New York Metropolitan Opera (where he sang the title role in Handel’s Giulio Cesare); and the inauguration of a new Beethoven string quartet cycle, which will carry over into the 2012/13 Season, from the Belcea Quartet – one of the world’s finest chamber ensembles.

Music-making of this calibre – not to mention the heavily subsidized tickets for students – would be impossible without the support of Camerata Musica’s donors and sponsors. From the outset, the series has received munificent core support from Sir Ralph Kohn, FRS, and the Kohn Foundation, whose enlightened philanthopy has done so much to advance the cause of music in Britain.

THE KOHN CONCERTS AND THE KOHN FOUNDATION

Camerata Musica is grateful to the Trustees of the Kohn Foundation, who have generously provided substantial funding for the substantial core funding for the furtherance of music at Peterhouse, and, in particular, for the establishment of the Kohn Concert Series.

The Kohn Foundation was established by Sir Ralph Kohn, FRS, in 1991, to support work in scientific and medical research, innovation, the arts, education, and humanitarian aid. It has been generous in its support of many scientific initiatives and institutions, including endowing substantial prizes in recognition of scientific and musical achievement. For all his activity in the furtherance of science and innovation, Ralph Kohn was elected an Honorary Fellow of the Royal Society in 2006. He is also a Fellow of the Royal Society of Medicine, an Honorary Fellow of the Academy of Medical Sciences, and an Honorary Fellow of the Royal Academy of Music. Dr Kohn was knighted in the New Year Honours List of 2010 for his services to science, music and philanthropy. For more information, visit The Kohn Foundation
